A4HU Strengthens Sub National CSO Family Planning Budget Advocacy
Following the launch of its Family Planning (FP) Budget Advocacy and Policy Agenda 2019-2021, Action 4 Health Uganda conducted an assessment of 80 CSOs working in Reproductive Health and Family Planning in Kamuli, Tororo, Mityana and Mukono districts, in order to ascertain their capacity to effectively contribute to joint advocacy interventions targeting the effective implementation of SRH/FP policies and increased domestic funding for FP.
The assessment highlighted gaps in FP policy advocacy among a great number of CSO actors, thus calling for an orientation exercise in the four districts, targeting 61 organizations. The two day workshop provided an introduction to FP Budget advocacy for some of the participants, and offered a platform for a refresher on some key areas of advocacy for some organizations that were already involved in advocacy.
Through participatory processes, the CSOs were able to develop advocacy messages regarding SRH that would form the basis for a strong joint advocacy process. The key areas that were highlighted during discussions included; teenage pregnancy, Gender Based Violence (GBV), knowledge gaps among health service providers, and underfunding of FP and low male involvement in FP advocacy, among others.
The meeting therefore facilitated the coordination of a stronger joint CSO coalition at sub national level, based on enhanced capacities to bring policy makers and service providers to account for their roles and responsibilities in prioritizing funding for youth friendly FP service delivery.
