Name: Steve Nelson
Previous title: CEO of JenCare, ChenMed’s senior medical center business
New title: President, senior-focused primary care provider ChenMed
ChenMed has tapped Nelson to lead day-to-day management and operations at the family-owned provider, which includes more than 125 senior medical centers in 15 states.
ChenMed is a full-risk primary care company focused on seniors with complex chronic conditions. The company hired Nelson in 2022 to lead JenCare, a joint venture with health insurer Humana.
Prior to that, Nelson was CEO of Duly Health and Care, a large multispecialty independent medical group. The executive also served as CEO of payer giant UnitedHealthcare from 2017 to 2019.
Although ChenMed doesn’t disclose its financials, the company has struggled amid reimbursement pressures and regulatory changes — it reportedly explored a potential sale of JenCare last year.
Rising pressure in the healthcare ecosystem led current CEO Chris Chen to step down from day-to-day operations but retain his title, Business Insider reported, citing audio of a company-wide meeting conducted last week.
Other members of the Chen family, including CMO Gordon Chen and chief clinical officer Jessica Chen, are also giving up their roles, according to BI. The Chen family will remain owners of the Miami-based company.
