Name: Michael Wagner
Previous title: Chief physician executive, Tufts Medicine
New title: President and CEO, Care New England
The board of Care New England, Rhode Island’s second-largest healthcare system, has selected Wagner as its incoming CEO following an “intensive search,” according to a release.
Current CEO James Fanale is stepping down as head of Care New England effective Dec. 1 to retire. Fanale served as chief executive for roughly five years.
Wagner most recently worked as CPE for integrated health system Tufts, where he helmed the system’s physician enterprise, including Tufts Medicine Integrated Network, Tufts Medicine Professional Group and Quality and Patient Safety and Service Lines.
Wagner is also currently President and CEO of the Tufts Medicine Professional Group and Tufts Medical Center Physicians Organization.
Care New England moved forward as an independent entity following a failed bid to merge with Lifespan, Rhode Island’s largest health system, earlier this year. The two systems inked a deal in 2021 to merge, but the Federal Trade Commission sued to block the deal in February, causing Care New England and Lifespan to abandon their plans.
