Elizabeth Awori, a teacher and photographer from Uganda emerged the overall winner of the Right By Her Instagram Competition 2019. The #RightByHer campaign works across Africa to make women’s rights a reality. The competition was run by Deutsche Stiftung Weltbevolkerung (DSW) global.

Elizabeth won a Nikon D5600 camera which was handed over to her by Dr. Tusiime Bernard, the DSW representative in Uganda.

“I am really very happy and excited. I don’t think I was going to buy a camera soon and yet I have just started my photography journey. So the timing of winning this camera has come in handy,” Elizabeth said upon receiving the camera at A4HU offices in Lubowa, Uganda.

To emerge the winner, Elizabeth made an Instagram post explaining why gender equality is important. She documented the day to day life of Jennifer Amony a female “boda boda” cyclist in Gulu district.

“I shared a picture of the only woman who was working as a “boda boda” cyclist among men in Gulu district. I wanted to tell her story to inspire other women to join spaces that are believed to be for predominantly men,” Elizabeth said.

Elizabeth noted that her goal now that she has a new camera is to shine a spot light on disadvantaged people so that they can find help. “I will tell more stories using pictures. Words can fail sometimes but pictures speak for themselves,” she said.
